What is athlete profiling?
Athlete profiling is the structured assessment of an athlete across every dimension that shapes performance — physiological attributes, psychological characteristics, technical abilities, and developmental factors — captured in one frame rather than as scattered, unconnected observations.
Why a single dimension is never enough
An athlete assessed only on physical output looks like a different athlete than one assessed only on technical skill. Neither view is wrong; both are incomplete. Potential is shaped by the interplay between dimensions, and that interplay is invisible when each is measured in isolation or held in a different coach's head.
Most academies already collect fragments of this picture. What is usually missing is a structure that holds those fragments together, applies the same standard to every athlete, and makes the result legible to someone who was not in the room.
What OnCourt profiling captures
A profile brings the four pillars of athletic development into one structured record:
- Physiological attributes — the physical capacities underpinning performance.
- Psychological characteristics — the cognitive and behavioural traits that shape how an athlete learns, competes, and responds to pressure.
- Technical abilities — sport-specific skill, assessed against a consistent standard rather than impression.
- Developmental factors — the context that changes as the athlete grows, and reframes what any single measure means.
What it replaces
Subjective evaluation is not worthless — an experienced coach's judgement is a real asset. The problem is that it does not travel. It cannot be compared between coaches, defended to a parent, revisited a season later, or applied at scale across an academy roster.
A profile makes assessment portable. The same athlete, assessed by a different coach, produces a comparable result. That is the precondition for everything else: benchmarking, tracking progress, and demonstrating development to the people who need to see it.
The other three services
Athlete development is one system; these four services are how OnCourt covers it.
